International Strategic Consultants specialising in delivering sustainable urabn environments. Our work spans many sectors with a multidisipline consultancy approach.

Our special quality that we bring to the group is our approach to sustainable masterplanning through the use of our SuBET tool. This was officially launched by the Steering Group for Sustainable Masterplanning at Hilson Moran following the signing of a partnership agreement on Friday, 2 October.

After eight years of development, SuBET offers a comprehensive, international, sustainable rating scheme and assessment tool that evaluates the sustainable design and performance of a major masterplan. It provides a valuable framework for masterplanning right from the start, incorporating not just the environmental aspects of sustainability, but also the social and economic impacts created by the design of a built environment project.

This powerful tool incorporates over 80 indicators of a scheme’s environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts. Its focus ranges from the micro scale (water, energy and so on) to the meso scale (such as land use, site selection and planning considerations), and broadens out to consider issues on the macro scale (such as greenhouse gas emissions from all energy used for the built environment, transport and infrastructure, together with wider urban and regional planning issues), right up to the global scale to tackle the impact on sustainability at national and international levels.

Sustainable Masterplanning examples include Greenwich Peninsula in London, Sesto San Giovanni and Milan and the new (2010) YAS island north Masterplan in Abu Dhabi UAE. We are also currently working on the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia which is a new 62 sq.m low energy sustainable urban development Masterplan on the outskirts of Riyadh.

Our responsibility includes conserving and protecting energy resources and reducing GHG emissions. Our commitment to act is based on our belief that a reduction in our direct or indirect use of fossil fuels – and resulting reduction in GHG emissions – will benefit the environment and us, as a business and as citizens, both now and in the future.

We understand that our use of these limited resources and the resultant GHG emissions must be minimized, not only to reduce our costs and improve our operational efficiency, but also to minimize any contribution to climate change that our operations and practices have, thereby ensuring availability of these vital resources for generations to come

We recognize the significance of climate change and believe that businesses must play a role in confronting it. We have developed a comprehensive response to the challenge of climate change and its expected impacts. The program includes:

Ensuring we consider climate change in the way we run our business and plan for growth

Engaging and partnering with others to find solutions – business partners, industry members, investors, and NGOs

Communicating transparently with our stakeholders about our progress in managing our greenhouse gas emissions

Supporting environmentally effective and economically sound public policies

Monitoring the effects of climate change on our business so that we can adapt.

We get our energy from five main sources: coal, waste wood, natural gas, fuel oil, and electricity. We have conducted a greenhouse gas inventory for the years 2005-2009. covering our worldwide facilities and operations, including business travel. This exercise identifies our major GHG emissions and their sources, enabling us to prioritize our actions and reduce energy consumption and emissions.

These are some of our initiatives to address climate change, while promoting cost efficiencies:

Improving energy efficiency across the company, by optimizing lighting, heating and cooling, and using various energy audit tools and programs to identify energy saving projects.

Installing a waste-to-energy process that fuels a boiler at our tequila plant in Mexico with biogas generated by an onsite wastewater treatment facility.

Promoting video and web-based meeting technologies, which reduce the need to travel.

Encouraging environmentally-responsible travel by including information within our online booking system that helps employees choose the best environmental option, including renting a hybrid car where available. This work won us the 2008 GetThere Travel Visionary Award.

Using an electronic “RideShare Board” which helps employees share a leased hybrid vehicle for joint business travel.

We were included in the 2010 Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) Leadership Index for our approach to climate change disclosure. We shared the highest score among beverage alcohol companies in the Consumer Staples sector

CDP is a not-for-profit organization that promotes corporate action and the reduction of financial risk from climate change. The Leadership Index highlights the constituent companies within the S&P 500 Index which have displayed the most professional approach to corporate governance in respect of climate change disclosure practices.

OUr annual responses to the Carbon Disclosure project, which details our climate change risks and opportunities, as well as additional details on our greenhouse gas emissions performance are available on the CDP’s website.

We also participate in The California Climate Action Registry (CCAR) where we report our greenhouse gas emissions inventory. Our involvement supports voluntary GHG reporting, and we benefit from the collaboration by learning about climate-change strategies and best practices in GHG accounting and verification.

In 2009, we joined The Climate Registry (TCR), and will begin voluntarily reporting our GHG emissions as of calendar year 2010 to TCR.

Carbon Disclosure Project: Included in Leadership Index 2008 and 2010

California Climate Action Registry: Awarded Climate Action Leader status for 2006, 2007, and 2008

2008 GetThere Travel Visionary Award

2008 Flex Your Power Award

2007 Environmental Protection Agency’s Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award

2008 California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA)

Safeguarding the Environment

Adapting Our Energy Practice for a Low Carbon Economy

High energy prices and price volatility, coupled with the impact on the environment of greenhouse gases generated from our use of energy, make energy management an important issue for Abbott. The greenhouse gases we emit from fuel combustion in our manufacturing sites make up a significant proportion of our direct impacts.

By the end of 2009, we had reduced carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 e) emissions from manufacturing by 36 percent compared with 2006 levels, normalized by sales, thereby exceeding our target of a 30 percent reduction by 2011.

To challenge ourselves further, we have set an absolute reduction target for CO2 e for 2015 (insert link). Between 2005 and 2009 we reduced our absolute CO2e by 10.7 percent, which represents good progress toward this new target.

Our Wider Footprint

Carbon emissions also are associated with the sourcing, distribution and consumer use of our products.

We are starting to estimate this wider carbon footprint, focusing first on indirect emissions arising in the supply chain and distribution. Our initial analysis using a third-party assessment tool suggests that our supply chain footprint is on the order of six to 14 times that of our direct emissions. Emissions from agriculture, particularly linked to the nutrition business, represent the single largest source of emissions. We intend to use the analysis of our wider footprint to help shape our future priorities. For example, waste management emerged as one of the top five sources of emissions – and we are responding by putting in place a phased waste management strategy that covers both our own manufacturing operations and ultimately those of our suppliers.

Climate Responsible Energy Policy

In 2009, Abbott made a number of major advances in managing its energy usage. As a result of these advances, we are working to update and revise our Climate Responsible Energy Policy, which provides guidance and goals to manage energy use and related emissions.

Our Global Energy Council includes representatives from our most energy intensive businesses. The Council works to monitor, evaluate and conserve total energy consumption globally while negotiating best-in-class price and delivery contracts and promoting the installation of financially beneficial energy conservation and alternative energy projects.

Through our myriad energy initiatives, we:

Negotiate competitive energy contracts.

Implement financial hedges to reduce volatility.

Perform energy audits to identify opportunities.

Transfer best-in-class energy practices.

Communicate energy knowledge.

Identify and implement financially responsible energy capital projects.

As a major utility in Hong Kong, Hongkong Electric is committed to conducting its business with respect and due care for the environment. We strive to meet or exceed customers’ requirements and expectations, to achieve a high standard in safety and to protect the health of our employees. Our business priorities are to ensure a safe and reliable electricity supply to customers by operating our facilities safely and efficiently. We are committed to protecting the environment by minimizing the impacts of our operations and seeking continuous improvements in our service, while at the same time providing a reasonable return to our shareholders.

On environmental protection, we will continue to comply with all statutory requirements and help Hong Kong fulfil her obligations under the various environmental protocols by best practicable means. We shall continue to meet the environmental, economic, and social needs of the existing and future generations, and strive to contribute towards the sustainable development of our community.

Environmental Protection

As a major public utility, The Hongkong Electric Company, Limited (HK Electric) recognises its social responsibility to protect and preserve the environment of our home. To this, we put great emphasis on environmental protection and invest substantially to resolve, alleviate and minimise the impact arising from our operations on the environment.

To realise this commitment, the Company has established specific corporate policy to care for and improve the environment. Under the policy, we have to ensure that the Company’s facilities comply with the Government’s environmental requirements and that the overall potential environmental impacts arising from the Company’s operations are minimal. To achieve this, the Company maintains close liaison and co-operation with the Environment Bureau and Environmental Protection Department of the Government.

We have a professional team of engineers and chemists to integrate environmental considerations in every stage of project planning, and the design of power station and electrical substation equipment. They are also responsible for the monitoring and assessment of the environment in the processes of power generation, transmission and distribution. State-of-the-art equipment such as wind tunnels and computer simulations are also employed in the testing stage to ensure that the best efforts be devoted to protecting the environment.

In the aspect of energy efficiency and conservation, the Company has sponsored the setting up of the Energy Efficiency Centre in the Hong Kong Science Museum. The centre displays educational exhibits to promote efficient use of energy. With the support of the Education Bureau and the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Company has developed separate energy efficiency education kits for primary schools and secondary schools. During 2000 – 2003, the Company successfully implemented a Demand Side Management Resource Plan, which included both rebate programs and non-rebate programs, to reduce electricity requirement. An annual educational campaign, the “Smart Power Campaign”, has also been implemented since 2003 to teach the younger generations in Hong Kong more about energy efficiency and the smart use of electricity. The HK Electric Clean Energy Fund was established in 2006 to donate about HK$1 million each year to finance the study and application of renewable energy among the education sector in Hong Kong.
